Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
