Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of files that contained no new information.
