Entire Career of Income Insufficient for UK Labor Force to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Report Says

Based on recent research, the median earner in the UK would require over five decades of income to achieve the net worth of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Growing Wealth Gap Through the Years

The study examined financial assets statistics from the recent health crisis years and discovered that back in 2006-08, it would have needed 38 years of average worker salary to join the wealthiest decile of the financial hierarchy.

An economic expert involved with the analysis observed: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would still not be able to reach the top of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Financial Disparity

The analysis found that the disparity between the net worth of the typical individual and a person belonging to the top 10% was £1 million in 2006-08, but had increased to 1.3 million pounds in actual value by the pandemic years.

The researcher added: "These differences are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Although the wealth gap growing in specific figures, the portion of total wealth in the UK held by the richest households – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," according to the study.

Over this timeframe, overall assets in the UK surged from three times the annual GDP, to approximately 7.5x.

Factors of Financial Divide

Referred to as "passive" appreciation, by means of increasing property values and changes in pension valuations, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity since 2010, according to the report.

These appreciations generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – intensifying the generational financial disparity.

Generational Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Geographic Differences

Additionally, there were pronounced regional variations, with the typical amount of assets in 2020-22 standing at £290k in south-east England, where housing costs have typically increased quickly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

COVID Era Impact

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were protected by the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate countless homes were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The typical family in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the 24 months before COVID. On the other hand, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the report finds.
