A Prediction Market User Earned $436K on Bets on Maduro's Downfall.
A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Market Movement in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that NicolƔs Maduro would be out of power by the end of January rose in the period preceding former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
But the odds had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in positions just before the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.
A small number of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Political Attention Intensifies
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
A bill presented on recently would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Market Background
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
